June 1, 2010 I published the last issue (at least for a while) of Girl Talk my teen girl magazine. Since this blog was originally designed for the purpose of publishing weekly devotions for the magazine and later the magazine itself I decided to create another blog that isn’t connected to Girl Talk.

I’ll probably still publish book reviews or other items here now and again but you’ll more often find me at Trusting Him with Today. I hope you’ll stop by

I'm a New Christian... Is it Wrong to Wear...?

Dear Girls,

You’ve just made the most important decision in your life. Welcome to the family of God. You’ll find out as you get to know us that we’re just like any other family. We make mistakes, we get angry, we do and say silly things sometimes. However, all of that is secondary to the fact that we love God and we love each other, faults and all.

You’ll find out as you walk this Christian journey that different people have different opinions about the dos and don’ts of being a Christian. Don’t get hung up on small stuff. The most important thing about being a Christian is your relationship with Jesus Christ.

I remember when I was a teenager, I was out on a Saturday and a gentleman passed me a gospel track and asked me if I was a Christian. I was pleased to say yes because I was a young Christian and quite excited about that fact. However, his incredulous response floored me. “You’re a Christian and you’re wearing that????”

What was I wearing? Believe it or not, jeans and a tshirt. But, according to what he believed, if I was a Christian I shouldn’t wear pants. I didn’t get into an argument with him. My response was simply, “If the God I serve is more concerned about the jeans that I’m wearing than He is about my heart then He’s not the God I thought He was.

Later that day though, I was still thinking about it. It bothered me that my faith was in question because of what I was wearing. However, a friend reminded me of the following scripture;

The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7
I’m not saying that we should not be concerned about the way we present ourselves or what we wear. However, that’s not the most important thing to God. The condition of your heart and your relationship with Him is what is most important to him. Hence, that should be most important to you too.

Until next time, stay strong in Him.

Amen, well said.

Very well put Bernice. If the condition of our heart is right with God then Jesus will determine what else He needs to make right and we will simply follow His lead.

Rich blessings to you!

This is a subject that I have contemplated a lot in my life. I love your spin on it!

Thank you for bringing this up. I find more and more the study of God's word is overshadowed these days by things like dress codes. Often this issue pits Christian against Christian in a time when we should be standing together.
Keep up the good work. :)

Bernadine,

Thanks for coming to visit me! So nice to meet you. I loved your post. My hubby likes to tell people that "my God says come as you are".

You did a great job by handling yourself in a nice way that spoke truth by the Word.

Blessings to you!

What wonderful words of wisdom from a young heart.

I've always wondered...if I did only wear dresses because of my faith, when the dress comes off, does this mean my faith is turned off also? Hmmm...

Love your blog!
